Hospital Says Motion is a Joint Effort

Burke Health offers valuable information during Arthritis Awareness Month.

Arthritis is one of the most common heath conditions in the United States and the leading cause of disability. About 59 million U.S. adults have been diagnosed with arthritis by a doctor, and nearly 26 million of those adults are unable to complete everyday activities because of arthritis. The highest arthritis rates are found in the Southeast and even more specifically in rural areas. Medication, physical therapy, or surgery could be recommended treatments, depending on severity of arthritis symptoms.

“There is a menu of options that will be tailored to the individual patient,” said Burke Health’s Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. David Doman. A few of these options may include, physical therapy to stretch and strengthen muscles; anti-inflammatory medications; however, some people can’t take these due to other medical issues; weight loss, especially for knee arthritis; and steroid injections, particularly for knee arthritis, but in certain cases hip and shoulder arthritis too.

“I like to say motion is lotion. If you have stiff joints, do not be afraid to move them,” said Dr. Doman. “If the pain bothers you regularly, it’s time to talk with your doctor. Knowledge is power. Just understanding what the pain is can decrease anxiety, so don’t be afraid to get that assessment upfront. In some cases, it may not be arthritis, so it is never too early to get checked out and find what treatment plan is best for you.”
